Reference Construction Site

The Reference Construction Site on the Melaten Campus

The reference construction site of the Center Construction Robotics (CCR) with an area of around 4,000 square meters is located in the heart of the 5G Industry Campus Europe on the Melaten Campus of RWTH Aachen University. The success story of the reference construction site began in February 2020 at Campus West. After more than two years of successful research there, the reference building site moved to the 5G-Industry-Campus Europe in September 2022 to become part of the research infrastructure for validating 5G in production as part of the 5G.Namico project.

Reference Construction Site is part of the 5G Industry Campus Europe

The Reference Construction Site of the Centre Construction Robotics has been part of the 5G-Industry Campus Europe (5G-ICE) since its move to the Melaten campus of RWTH Aachen University. The 5G-ICE is one of the German government’s official 5G model regions and, at the time of the application, the largest industrial 5G testbed in Europe. It is a large-scale research infrastructure to validate 5G in production. The Melaten Campus is covered with a 5G outdoor network of approximately 1 km². All sites have a local breakout with independent tenant configurations to have the entire network capacity for the use cases. 5G-ICE is operated as a standalone non public network (SNPN) with a central core network hosted at Fraunhofer IPT, the central coordinator of the 5G-ICE.

Research and teaching on the construction site of the future

Research is being conducted here at the construction site of the future via digitalization – from the pre-production of building elements to the automated construction site. The reference construction site will serve as a reality laboratory. New construction processes and products, networked machines, the implementation of robots, software solutions, as well as teaching, working and communication concepts will be tested under real construction site conditions here.
Furthermore, the new international Master in Construction and Robotics at RWTH Aachen University will use the real laboratory for practice-oriented and research-led knowledge transfer.

Networking & Offers

The reality laboratory is the starting point for the development of a far-reaching network in the field of construction transformation.

As a working basis for this, the reference construction site offers the following equipment:

  • Outdoor areas with different ground conditions
  • Flexible container units for training and research projects and events as required
  • Technological infrastructure
  • Selection of hardware, software and machines

If you are interested in networking here and would like to use the reference site for your projects, then get in touch with us! With a fair use principle we offer different possibilities to participate in the reality laboratory.

Please send us an email to office@construction-robotics.de and we will contact you personally!

Sponsors of the reference construction site

The Center Construction Robotics will be planning and coordinating operations of the reference construction site on Campus West. This collaborative project was made possible for the most part on the basis of a Crowdsourcing effort by all members of the Center Construction Robotics, members of the Center Mobile Machinery, the AACHEN BUILDING EXPERTS e. V. and a number of RWTH institutions.

Main industry sponsors for the project include PORR, Liebherr Tower Cranes division, EIFFAGE, LEONHARD WEISS GmbH & Co. KG, HILTI AG and Autodesk GmbH. They provide financial and infrastructural support for the reference construction site.

In addition to the main sponsors, various companies from a range of industry sectors are similarly involved in the reference construction site, including Doka GmbH, KUKA Deutschland GmbH, Saint-Gobain, Annen GmbH + Co.KG, Lamparter GmbH & Co. KG, Robots in Architecture Research UG, BROKK AB, Wurst Stahlbau GmbH, Volvo Construction Equipment Germany GmbH.
